When we think of songs of the First World War, what immediately spring to mind are the popular soldier songs such as “Tipperary”, “Pack up your troubles”, and many others. There are, of course, many songs in which words were adapted by the soldiers themselves – often not to be sung in polite company!
CHAMBER WORKS: “THAT BLOODY GAME”
AUSTRALIAN SONGS OF WORLD WAR I
Michael Halliwell – baritone

This program is drawn from the hundreds of songs in the National Library of Australia, and traces the changing attitudes, from the overtly patriotic and even militaristic recruiting songs of the early part of the war, moving through a period after Gallipoli when the extent of the casualties gradually became apparent and the songs reflect an increasing seriousness.cial issues that characteriSed the post-war years.
